Ear Piercings
Every ear piercing from classic lobes to helix, conch, daith, and industrial — needle-pierced with implant-grade titanium. Curated ear styling at ATS.
The ear is the most versatile piercing canvas on the body — over a dozen distinct placements, from the classic lobe to sculptural cartilage work, that can be collected one at a time into a “curated ear” styled like jewelry. At American Tattoo Society, every ear piercing — including kids' first lobes — is done with a single-use sterile needle and implant-grade jewelry. We never use piercing guns: needles are more precise, dramatically gentler on tissue (especially cartilage), and the professional standard for good reason.
Your Ear Piercing Menu
Lobe placements
- Standard lobe — the classic; heals in 6–8 weeks.
- Upper/stacked lobes and orbital lobes — second, third, and creative placements that build the foundation of a curated ear.
Cartilage placements (typical healing 6–12 months — cartilage is slow and worth the patience)
- Helix — the outer upper rim; the most popular cartilage piercing.
- Forward helix — the rim just above the tragus, often done in stacked pairs or triples.
- Flat — the flat plate of upper cartilage; the star of modern curated-ear styling.
- Conch — the inner shell; stunning with a stud or (after healing) a wrap-around hoop.
- Tragus and anti-tragus — the small nubs guarding the ear canal; subtle and striking.
- Daith — the innermost cartilage fold, home of the perfect small hoop.
- Rook and snug — vertical folds pierced with curved barbells; anatomy-dependent, and we'll tell you honestly what your ear supports.
- Industrial — one barbell through two helix points; bold, geometric, and placement-critical.
Bring inspiration photos and we'll map what your specific anatomy supports — every ear is different, and honest anatomy assessment is where professional piercing starts.
The Curated Ear: Styling, Not Just Piercing
The modern approach treats the ear as a composition: mixing studs, hoops, and chains across placements that complement each other. Our piercers plan multi-piercing projects the way tattoo artists plan sleeves — what you're getting today, what's next, and how the finished ear hangs together. We typically pierce up to 2–3 placements per visit so healing stays manageable, then build from there.
Jewelry, Healing, and Aftercare
Fresh piercings get implant-grade titanium (ASTM F-136) sized for initial swelling, with a downsize appointment once swelling subsides — downsizing is the most skipped and most important step in cartilage healing, preventing the angle drift and irritation bumps that ruin piercings. Aftercare is simple: sterile saline, clean hands, no twisting, and no sleeping on fresh cartilage (travel pillows are the veteran move). Full routine on our piercing aftercare page, and free checkups any time something feels off.
Ear Piercings and Military Life
Serving five base communities means we answer these daily:
- In uniform, earring rules are strict: generally no earrings for male service members, and only limited, conservative studs for female service members in specific uniforms — with cartilage and multiple-lobe jewelry typically not authorized in uniform. Standards vary by branch and evolve; know your current regs and command policy before adding piercings you can't dress down.
- Healing means jewelry stays in. A piercing that must be emptied for duty every day during its healing window will usually fail. The practical play for active duty: time new piercings for leave blocks or roles where standards allow, and keep expectations honest — we'd rather lose a sale than pierce something that's doomed by the training calendar.
- Spouses, dependents, veterans, and retirees face none of this — and they're the heart of our ear-piercing clientele. Kids' first lobes, milestone piercings, and curated-ear projects are everyday joys in our studios. Here's our guide to choosing a piercing shop in a military town.
Kids' Ear Piercing at ATS
We pierce children's lobes with needles, not guns — gentler, more precise, and safer. Requirements: a parent or legal guardian present with valid ID, the child's documentation per state rules, and — non-negotiable — the kid actually wanting it. Age minimums and paperwork vary by state; call your local studio before coming in.
Frequently Asked
Which ear piercing hurts least?
Lobes, easily. Cartilage placements are a stronger pinch with brief pressure — quick, and consistently rated "better than I expected."
Why won't you use a piercing gun?
Guns blunt-force jewelry through tissue, can't be fully sterilized, and are especially damaging to cartilage. Needles are cleaner, gentler, and more precise. It's not close.
How long until I can change ear jewelry?
Lobes: about 2 months. Cartilage: 6–12 months, with a downsize in between. We'll do your first change with you in-studio.
Can I sleep on my new piercing?
Try not to — pressure during healing causes irritation bumps and angle drift. A travel pillow ("donut" method) protects a healing cartilage piercing overnight.
How many piercings can I get at once?
We recommend 2–3 per session so your body can heal them well. Curated ears are marathons, not sprints — and better for it.
