About This Studio

Built In Norfolk, For Naval Station Norfolk

American Tattoo Society's newest studio opened in 2026 at the doorstep of Naval Station Norfolk — the largest naval base in the world. Sailors have been getting tattooed outside these gates for over a century; we're here to carry that tradition forward with modern standards: award-quality custom work, professional piercing, and a crew that understands fleet life, minutes from the piers.

Why We Opened Here

Norfolk is where American naval tattooing lives. Home to U.S. Fleet Forces Command and the Atlantic Fleet's carriers, destroyers, and amphibs, Naval Station Norfolk cycles tens of thousands of Sailors through workups, deployments, and homecomings every year — and the Navy's tattoo culture is the oldest and richest in the American military. Swallows, anchors, shellback turtles, pigs and chickens: these traditions were born pierside, and they deserve a studio at the gate that does them justice.

Clean, Private, Professional

Every station runs hospital-grade: single-use needles and tubes, autoclave-sterilized equipment, hospital disinfectant between every client, and bloodborne-pathogen-certified artists. Private booths are available for cover-ups, larger placements, and anyone who wants their session off the main floor. The old sailor-town tattoo parlor had charm; we kept the charm and fixed the standards.

Walk-Ins & Appointments

Walk-ins are welcome every day we're open, first-come first-served — built for duty schedules, liberty windows, and the pace of the fleet. For larger custom pieces, booking ahead guarantees your artist and slot, which matters when you're planning work around a deployment date. Consultations are always free.

Custom Work Is The Standard

Bring a reference, an idea, or just the story of the cruise. The Norfolk crew works across American Traditional — the Navy's home style — plus black & grey, realism, color, fine line, lettering, Japanese, cover-ups, and memorial work. Piercings run daily, from lobes to dermals.

The Atmosphere

Machines buzzing, flash on the walls, and straight answers at the counter — the way a Navy-town shop should feel, without the 1970s hygiene. We named the company American Tattoo Society because of towns exactly like this one: a place for the brave who serve to mark what matters. Welcome aboard.

Tattooing The Sailors Of Naval Station Norfolk

Tattooing at the gate of the world's largest naval base means working on the fleet's clock. Workups, deployment cycles, duty rotations, and homecomings shape every week of our books — so we built the studio around them. Pre-deployment brings protection pieces, family names, and coordinates before the ship pulls out. The cruise itself earns the traditional ink: shellbacks for crossing the equator, swallows for miles at sea, and the pig-and-chicken pieces sailors have trusted for a century. Homecoming brings the celebration — new ink for a safe return and matching pieces with the ones who kept the home fires burning. Advancement, reenlistment, and EAOS tattoos mark the road between: a new crow, a new contract, or twenty years distilled into one piece on the way to the retirement ceremony. And memorial work is sacred ground — for shipmates lost at sea and brothers and sisters who didn't come home, we take all the time it needs to get it right. We work regulation-aware under the Navy's tattoo policy — one of the most tattoo-friendly in the military — with unit and rate insignia done correctly and traditions treated like the heritage they are. For active-duty military, in-house financing is available: get the work now, pay it off over time.

Local FAQ

Questions From Naval Station Norfolk

Walk-ins welcome, consultations always free. Can't find it? Start a Tattoo Talk and a real artist answers.

What's the closest tattoo shop to Naval Station Norfolk?

American Tattoo Society Norfolk — we're the first building outside the port, minutes from the gates and the piers. If you're stationed aboard, nobody's closer.

Do you take walk-ins or do I need an appointment?

Both. Walk-ins are first-come first-served every day we're open — built for duty schedules and liberty windows. Booking ahead guarantees your artist and slot for larger pieces. Consultations are always free.

Can I get tattooed under the Navy's tattoo policy?

The Navy has one of the most tattoo-friendly policies in the military — full sleeves are authorized and even limited neck tattoos are permitted within the rules. Check our Navy tattoo policy guide for specifics and confirm details with your command.

Do you do traditional Navy tattoos — shellback, swallows, pig and chicken?

That's our bread and butter. These traditions were born in ports like this one, and our artists do them with the history in mind — correct symbols, correct placement, correct spirit.

Do you offer financing for military?

We offer in-house financing for active-duty military — get the work now and pay it off over time. Bring your military ID and ask at the counter.

What ID do I need?

Valid government-issued photo ID proving 18+ — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military CAC. We card everyone, every time.

How old do I have to be?

18 with valid photo ID for any tattoo — Virginia doesn't allow tattooing minors except in a parent's presence under narrow rules, so plan on 18. Some piercings differ for minors with a parent present; call ahead.

Can I get tattooed before deployment?

Yes — build in about two weeks of clean healing before you're back aboard. Salt water, sweat, and shipboard life are rough on fresh ink. Tell your artist your underway date and we'll plan the session around it.

Can military spouses and dependents get tattooed here?

Of course — spouses and dependents 18+ with valid ID are the other half of every homecoming tradition we ink. Matching pieces and family names come through constantly.

You're the newest ATS studio — who's doing the work?

Experienced ATS artists, same standards as every studio we run. Check the crew section above for the current roster and their books — and watch it grow.
